There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the dividing line from nearby Thailand, in which casino betting is banned. Eight gambling dens are established in a generally small space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a perfect location, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular betting centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of restrictions requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; still, financial sources are ambiguous. The borders are ceremoniously open from 09:00 to 1700, and although visas are apparently needed to cross, there are means around this, as is true of most borders.

The original Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship gambling den, contains one hundred and fifty slots and 60 tables. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 one armed bandits and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international vacation and hotel complex that features a number of conveniences accompanying the casino, which contains ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slots and 88 table games.
