There is an appealing background to the Cambodia casinos that sit just across the border from neighboring Thailand, in which casino wagering is not legal. Eight casinos are anchored in a relatively tiny location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect location, a 3 to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing capital gained from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of restrictions constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; however, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are for all intents and purposes required to cross, there are ways around this, as is true of most borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked boat casino, features one hundred and fifty slot machines and sixty tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of 150 slot machine games and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 one armed bandits and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and ninety six table games, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the normal table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel building that features a number of luxuries on top of the gambling hall, which offers ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machines and 88 gaming tables.
