There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den gaming is not allowed. Eight gambling dens are established in a relatively small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent location, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a few limitations constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; although, financial sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 1700, and though visas are supposedly needed to cross, there are ways around this, as is accurate of most border crossings.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked boat gambling den, features 150 slot machine games and sixty table games. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of 150 slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slots and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international resort and hotel building that highlights many amenities aside from the gambling den, which contains 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty slots and eighty eight tables.
