There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the border from neighboring Thailand, where casino wagering is banned. Eight gambling halls are situated in a relatively small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent destination, a three to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing income acquired from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of restrictions requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; still, financial sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and despite the fact visas are for all intents and purposes required to pass, there are means around this, as is real of many borders.
The first Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored boat gambling den, highlights one hundred and fifty slot machines and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling den is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred one armed bandits and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and ninety six table games, including eighty seven punto banco (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around vacation and hotel building that features many amenities in addition to the casino, which has 10,000 square feet of 130 slot machine games and 88 table games.
