The entire process of living in Zimbabwe is something of a gamble at the current time, so you may think that there would be very little appetite for visiting Zimbabwe’s gambling halls. In fact, it appears to be operating the opposite way, with the awful market conditions creating a higher ambition to bet, to try and discover a quick win, a way out of the difficulty.
For nearly all of the citizens surviving on the meager local money, there are 2 common forms of gambling, the state lottery and Zimbet. As with most everywhere else in the world, there is a national lotto where the odds of profiting are remarkably low, but then the prizes are also remarkably big. It’s been said by financial experts who look at the subject that the lion’s share do not purchase a ticket with the rational assumption of hitting. Zimbet is based on either the local or the United Kingston soccer divisions and involves determining the results of future matches.
Zimbabwe’s gambling halls, on the other foot, cater to the very rich of the society and vacationers. Up till a short while ago, there was a very substantial tourist business, based on nature trips and visits to Victoria Falls. The economic woes and associated conflict have cut into this trade.
Among Zimbabwe’s casinos, there are two in the capital, Harare, the Carribea Bay Resort and Casino, which has 5 gaming tables and slot machines, and the Plumtree gambling hall, which has just the slot machine games. The Zambesi Valley Hotel and Entertainment Center in Kariba also has just slots. Mutare contains the Monclair Hotel and Casino and the Leopard Rock Hotel and Casino, the two of which contain gaming tables, slots and electronic poker machines, and Victoria Falls has the Elephant Hills Hotel and Casino and the Makasa Sun Hotel and Casino, both of which has slot machines and tables.
In addition to Zimbabwe’s gambling halls and the above talked about lottery and Zimbet (which is very like a pools system), there are a total of two horse racing tracks in the country: the Matabeleland Turf Club in Bulawayo (the second city) and the Borrowdale Park in Harare.
Seeing as that the market has diminished by more than forty percent in the past few years and with the associated deprivation and violence that has come to pass, it is not understood how healthy the sightseeing industry which is the backbone of Zimbabwe’s gambling halls will do in the next few years. How many of them will still be around till conditions improve is simply not known.
